LOCO Roller Derby Open House in downtown London, Ontario!

Come meet LOCO Roller Derby

London, Ontario's recreational roller derby league open house!

Come meet London, Ontario’s LOCO Roller Derby skaters! Ask us all the questions you might have, see what kind of skates and gear you need, meet some LOCO Roller Derby members and find out if recreational, low-contact roller derby is right for you!

If you want to come out and try it, ask for a free pass, tell us if you need skates to try it and tell us your shoe size, and we’ll set you up! You’ll also be entered into a free draw for a LOCO Roller Derby T-Shirt! We also have a few free gifts, first come, first serve, and if you want to get a skater information package and sign up, purchase a skate card, or just come see what it’s all about, we’ll be there! And if you aren’t sure about playing, how about becoming a volunteer referee? Men, that means you can train to skate too, learn the rules, and make yourself into a roller derby referee that can then assist not only LOCO, but surrounding full-contact leagues in Ontario.

We have 2 days and 3 times you can c me meet us, for your convenience!

LOCO adds Rollergirl.ca and Fowler Designs as Sponsors

LOCO Roller Derby is proud to announce two new sponsors joining those behind our mission to bring the sport of roller derby in a recreational format to all women that want to rollerskate for Fun, Fitness, and Friendship, in a roller derby pick-up game, scrimmage environment.

Rollergirl.ca is sponsoring LOCO Roller Derby! As a member of LOCO Roller Derby you can join us in bulk ordering skates, wheels, safety gear, and everything you need to play roller derby, at lower prices. Plus, you know Rollergirl.ca has the best customer service we’ve seen, and all products are tested and certified, or Rollergirl won’t sell them. Watch for some special events with LOCO Roller Derby this summer, where you may get to bid on some very cool merchandise!

We are also proud to announce that Mr. Mark Fowler of Fowler Designs has sponsored us with media kit and poster designs that you’ll see this summer. He will be helping us design our marketing materials from business cards to media kits, sponsorship packages and posters. We look forward to letting Fowler Designs make us look good!

If you would like to sponsor LOCO Roller Derby, with anything from equipment to personal training, massages to sports medicine and physiotherapy, from clothing and merchandise to photos and video, from printing to promotional events, contact info@locorollerderby.com.  See who else is sponsoring us already: Our Sponsors

London’s LOCO Roller Derby gets ready for scrimmaging

Thank you to all who donated. We raised $60 for the Canadian Mental Health Association, which will result in LOCO Roller Derby obtaining a set of league helmet panties, and knowing we did a good deed in donating to a good cause.

In other news, we did skill testing tonight, and all of our attending skaters passed to a level high enough that we’ll be bringing scrimmaging into our practices more often, and for more serious practice of roller derby, while continuing drills to increase the skill levels. But don’t worry. We always have a beginner’s trainer on hand, and a beginner’s area for safety, so don’t be intimidated, we’ll help you get started!

Don’t forget, you can support LOCO Roller Derby and keep us providing gear for our new skaters and getting more people skating, by buying LOCO Roller Derby T-shirts. $20 for members and $25 for non-members. Ask any LOCO Roller Derby skater to order! Shirts are now available in women’s fitted, women’s tank, and men’s /unisex styles and sizes, and come with optional name and number on the back. In red or black color choices.

Please note: Practices are closed on Friday May  21, 2010 in observance of the long weekend for Victoria Day on May 24. We’ll see you back on the track on Friday May 28, 2010, at the YMCA Centre Branch, corner Waterloo and King, London, Ontario! Watch for the next event, and keep skating!

Donate with LOCO Roller Derby to CMHA!

London’s LOCO Roller Derby, your low contact roller derby league, is raising money for the Canadian Mental Health Association! The CMHA Mental Health week wraps up today, on May 9, but for the next week, we’re letting you join us. Any amount, and size donation, will be submitted in the name of LOCO Roller Derby through NogginKnickers.com by R’effin Adorabell in Toronto. You’ll help LOCO Roller Derby get set of helmet covers (or noggin knickers/helmet panties), and any costs over the $5 for materials will be directly donated to the CMHA!

We already have raised over $50. Can you help us reach $100?  You can donate cash to any LOCO Rollergirl! Please note, Paypal donations have been disabled currently. We’ll be arranging for credit card acceptance soon. For this donation drive, please contact info@locorollerderby.com. You’ll be supporting a local sports organization as well as helping reach those that are fighting against Mental Health issues. Donate today!

A noggin knicker

*Ends 5/16/2010 and after that date, all donations will go to LOCO Roller Derby and  will be used
to buy equipment for new skaters, training equipment, and non-profit organization expenses.

Support recreational roller derby in London, Ontario - help LOCO Roller Derby get equipment for new skaters, and get a cool T-shirt to wear while you are at it!

London Ontario’s LOCO Roller Derby is preparing to recruit you!

LOCO Roller Derby members have been skating every week the past month, and have started learning roller derby through scrimmaging on a marked flat track setup. What do we have in store for the spring?

We have our first annual membership meeting, where we’re electing our board members for 2010-2011! That’s right, the board is changing already, because we are committed to having the skaters decide who they want running the show, and it is up to our membership to decide. We’re also planning some promotional committee stuff, so you may start to see us pop up around town, on skates, or recruiting you to come learn to roller skate and learn to play roller derby in a low contact and fun environment.

We also have T-Shirts that we’ll have available very soon for order, so if you like our logo and want to show it off, get ready!

If you want to be involved with London, Ontario’s best new sports organization for women, come on out tomorrow night, or any Friday, and try it. $5 gets you in. We have limited loaner skates available. Conact us for more information. We ask you try to bring your own safety gear. Please see the membership information for more details.

Keep rolling!

LOCO Roller Derby First Quarterly Skate Clinic and BOD Meeting

LOCO Roller Derby will have it’s first Board of Directors meeting on Saturday March 20, 2010 at 1 PM. We invite all interested sponsors, members, current skaters and members, or other parties to send their questions or concerns to locorollerderby@gmail.com prior to the meeting so that the agenda can include your requests and issues. Meeting minutes and Board decisions will be published to the members of LOCO Roller Derby that have voting rights for final approval, and for non-members, if an issue has been raised, we will advise you of the decisions.

Following the BOD meeting, we are holding our first quarterly skate maintenance clinic. This first clinic is from 3-5 PM on March 20 2010, open to all LOCO Roller Derby members and skaters (so come on out and skate with us this Friday to get an invite!) and we’ll be teaching the new skaters how to take apart their skates and put them back together. How to clean bearings, and how to adjust stoppers. We’ll also talk about outdoor skating, with Spring on the way, and the differences in wheel types, hardness and skate setup for different styles of derby skaters.

We’ve also started showing the world our league, with video of our Games on Skates, and pictures in our Facebook Group. Check out some of us below:

POLO on Roller Skates – one of the games we play at the end of practice to help relax and practice skating.
