Skate-A-Thon A Rousing Success!

LOCO’s Skate-A-Thon for 2011 was a huge success. As usual, everyone had a blast skating in the park together and enjoyed a delicious potluck lunch with friends and family. We raised approximately $240 for the YMCA Strong Kids program and the rest of the funds went to LOCO. Many thanks to all the skaters and their pals who made Skate-A-Thon 2011 so amazing!

LOCO Wins vs. Rollergettes!

Final Score: 34 – 20

Photo provided by Rosemary Van Gelderen

With skaters from our London and Kitchener Chapters, LOCO met with Rollergettes’ Fresh Meat for a Mini-Bout of 20 minutes. It was a short game, but action packed and full of some incredible strategy. Our spectators were impressed with how intense low-contact modified derby is, going to show that it’s still the same game and deserves respect! We celebrated with a few heads in the ice bucket – boy, was it hot!

Special thanks to Vegas, LOCO’s VP Trainer and VP London who whipped the team into shape even if she couldn’t be there at the game.

London LOCO @ Pride 2011

Watch for LOCO Roller Derby in the Pride Festival Parade, on July 24, 2011.

Starting at noon, we’ll be leaving the Western Fair Grounds on the Ontario St. side and head down King St. to the festival site at King & Clarence. Skaters are asked to meet at the Western Fair Grounds starting at 11 am to prepare. We’re also looking for skater volunteers to man our booth at the festival site all weekend.

Come to our booth to purchase LOCO Wear and clothes by InDeeTees.

WIPEOUT BOUT a success!

LOCO Roller Derby London is proud to announce that we were able, with the help of the attendees of our bout to end sexual violence, to raise a total donation of $2063 for the Sexual Assault Center London! The event on Sunday May 1 included a small turn out for the self defense class, but those that attended spoke highly of the gained knowledge, so it was worth it if the knowledge helps one of them avoid an attack in the future. For the bout, all the ticket holders showed up, and did they ever get a good show!

There were fast skaters, falls, hits, shoves, major penalties, minor penalties, laughs, gasps, chills and thrills. The score was back and forth, first the Black Heartz, then the Pretty Terrors, but in the end, the Black Heartz defensive lines held up over the more agile Pretty Terrors and topped the night with a 130-11o win. The two highest point scorers were Black Heartz’ Soul Steeler with a 19 point jam (and ironically a 3 major penalties game) and Vegas with an answering 18 point jam.

Al Coombs preps for WIPE OUT Announcing with Vansterdamn on CJBK

Vansterdamn, Captain of the Pretty Terrors, talks to Al Coombs today on CJBK about the bout, and getting ready to be our colorful announcer. Sadly, our best wishes go out to John Urban who was slated to be our play by play sports announcer, and we are looking for a replacement. If you know roller derby, or other sports announcing, we can help with the rest. Email info@locorollerderby.com to let us know you can help! The event is Sunday May 1 2011

Sarah Smith volunteers and After Party is announced!

Thanks go out to Sarah Smith, also known as the lead singer of The Joys, who graciously agreed to attend WipeOut and sing the national anthem for the kickoff of the SACL Charity event roller derby bout for LOCO Roller Derby. We are happy to have her, and can’t wait!

As lucky ticket holders that got tickets prepare for the date, we’re also happy to announce the after party!

Join as at:

located at 359-361 Dundas St, London, ON.

After the bout ends, the members of LOCO will need a bit of time to take down our stuff and take off our skates, but we invite the attendees to head to The Morrissey House for the after party. Servers will be ready for a big rush for meals, check out the bar for the LOCO Roller Derby Bloody Lip drink special (To be announced), and the appearance of balloons will signal the party is going to kick off soon. At 10 PM, expect a roller derby playlist to kick off, provided by LOCO Roller Derby and for derby girls to show up for snacks and cold beer to hold against their bruises and mingling to say their after bout – no “I am sorry” in derby post-bout tales of OOPS, I knocked you on your face and we were supposed to be LOW CONTACT!

Meet the skaters, have some drinks, some eats, and dance it all off as the losing team tries to win the after party.

Sponsorships and volunteer spots are still available for the bout, and bout programs ad sizes are
Full page – 5″ x 8″ = $30
Half page – 5″ x 4″ – $15
LOGO: Free for LOCO Roller Derby Sponsors and BOUT Sponsors

And all of our sponsors will get shout outs and have available banner hanging options, and merch tables are available for interested parties.

See you on Sunday at the Victoria Park SlutWalk, and on May 1 2011 at NLOCC as LOCO raises money for the SACL!

WIPEOUT: A Roller Derby Bout to Wipeout Sexual Violence

For the official Press release click here

The London teams of LOCO Roller Derby are proud to announce that as part of the Sexual Assualt Center London’s (SACL) May Sexual Assault Awareness Month, we were chosen to help support the SACL in raising money to end sexual violence.

We are proud to kick off our involvement with community women’s affairs, by helping out the London’s Solidarity SLUT Walk, in support of a public awareness campaign against judging sexual assault victims or women on how they dress being responsible for them being victimized. A short skirt does not cause rape, a rapist causes rape. April 10, you’ll find us at the walk in Victoria Park. More Information. This event is organized by the Amazon Collective and V Day Western.

Then on May 1, LOCO Roller Derby is presenting two events. The first is a Self-Defence and awareness session hosted by the SACL and volunteer instructors for women and their friends, sisters, mothers, daughters, or partners (female 16+ or under Parental Guidance). Tickets are available for the Self Defense course only from the SACL or LOCO Roller Derby skaters. $10 advance tickets only.  4:30-6PM. Learn how to be aware of your surroundings, a few self-defence tricks, and help support the SACL.

The second is a roller derby bout, featuring London LOCO Roller Derby teams now named The Black Heartz and The Pretty Terrors playing women’s flat track roller derby, under a LOCO rule set which is equal to Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby Association rules, with an edited penalty set including a major penalty for full momentum, overly aggressive body blocks that knock a skater to the ground and a minor if it only changes her position. Merchandise and Snack tables will be setup, as well as vendor and partner information tables available. Tickets are available from the SACL or LOCO Roller Derby. Tickets are also available at: Ticketscene.  $10 advance, $12 at door. Kids under 12 $5. Under 5 – Free.  Doors open at 6 PM, bout starts at 7 PM.

Combination tickets are also available from the SACL and LOCO Roller Derby Skaters for $15 in advance/$20 at the door, and donations or “ghost tickets” to support the cause are welcomed if you want to help, but can’t attend the bout.

There is limited seating availability, so get your tickets soon! Come check out LOCO Roller Derby in our first live bout in London, ON and help us Wipeout Sexual Violence in London!  For more information, or to sponsor the event, please contact info@locorollerderby.com

See us at the May 27 Wine, Dine and Showtime event for the SACL as we also help close the month of Sexual Assault Awareness.
