LOCO Roller Derby in London, Ontario is a non-profit sports and recreation organization. We are committed to bringing the women of London a new, exciting, edgy, and retro rollerskating way of having FUN, getting FIT and making FRIENDS. Roller Derby began it’s revival as a grass-roots, feministic, and all-encompassing movement to bring a contact sport back into style. We’re going to carry on that tradition by retaining all the fun of roller derby (You’ll get to pick your own derby name, dress like a rollergirl or with your own style, get in shape and meet lots of fantastic women from all walks of life) and remove the aggressive hitting, to reduce the injury risk and to let the sport become accessible to all types, ages, and sizes of women everywhere.

Membership:

LOCO Roller Derby has several options of how you can join us!

You can skate with LOCO Roller Derby without becoming a full member, just by showing up to a Friday night practice! Your first-time visit will include us welcoming you, gathering some information from you and having you sign a waiver, and it’ll cost you only $5!  Contact us in advance if you don’t have your own roller skates, and we’ll do our best to locate a rental pair you can borrow until you get your own. If we don’t have your size available, or you drop in and we didn’t know you were coming, you can also do your first night on rollerblades, if you already skate.

Don’t forget your safety gear! Learning to skate and using skating as an exercise, and not just a leisure activity, and playing roller derby, even though we play low-contact rules, means you’ll be falling, sprinting, running, jumping, and skating very fast. While you’re learning new moves, you may fall. And once you start playing roller derby, you will fall. We even use knee falls sometimes to stop or turn around to slow ourselves. So you need your gear!

Knee and Elbow pads, (see the FAQ for detail on recommended styles), wrist guards, a mouth guard and a skate helmet are required items. You can find starter items at any skateboard, or sports store, but remember to look for good padding! We have very limited spare items of safety gear, but it is first come, first serve, and size is limited. We recommend you buy your gear in advance, or borrow some. Rollerblading pads will work for your first night out, and a bike helmet will suffice too. Don’t be shy, come on out and try it!

Once you get started, and you meet all the great women and trainers, you might decide to stay! If so, you’ll be signed up as a Member of LOCO Roller Derby. You’ll pay a small $5 dues fee each month, and you an either continue paying $5 per night, or you can buy a skate card, that gets you two nights free! (10 skates for $40). You’ll also need to complete an Insurance application (you won’ tbe refused) and become a member of the Canadian Women’s Roller Derby Association as part of LOCO Roller Derby. That will cost you only $50 annually, and gives you coverage for accidental death, as well as injury and medical costs above OHIP coverage, that arise from any LOCO Roller Derby organization practice or skating event.

And optionally, if you want to become a voting member of the organization, it’s $10 annually and that gives you the right to run for a board of directors position, vote on the directors, and vote to have a say on all issues that affect you as a skating member of LOCO Roller Derby.

Insurance:

Because we rent spaces to skate, we are required to carry league insurance. LOCO Roller Derby will be covered by CanSports Insurance via membership with the Canadian Women’s Roller Derby Association (CWRDA). Information on the organization, or for a copy of the membership agreement, you can visit http://www.cwrda.ca.
2010 : For the year of 2010, Canadian National Coverage is available to LOCO Roller Derby members for $50.00 CDN. Please speak one of us at your first or next practice for more information. Also for 2010, if you are a previous Roller Derby player and have RSC insurance, you will be covered to skate with us.  We will need a copy of your RSC card, or your RSC number to validate.

We require all skaters to have insurance coverage. You must sign a waiver prior to your first practice, and it will remain in effect permanently. If you do not submit your Insurance documents and payments, you will not be allowed to scrimage with LOCO Roller Derby.

To pre-complete your waiver document and insurance document, please ask for one at your next practice, or download them from the downloads page.

 See you on the track!
