What You Need To Know
Q: Why is LOCO different from other derby leagues?
LOCO Roller Derby is a recreational, low-contact, non-competitive roller derby league. Unlike a competitive team, we do not rank in the national standings. We have no attendance requirements and are open to a lower level of skater proficiency. We are a more casual derby league, so women who love the sport but may not have the time, finances or athletic level needed to commit to a competitive team find a haven in LOCO Roller Derby. It’s also a perfect place for retired competitive roller derby skaters and those who are new to the sport and want to learn.
Q: What do I need to do to join?
Show up at your local practice. See the Schedule links above for our chapters in London, Kitchener and Stratford. Your first skate is free and loaner gear is available for skaters who don’t have any equipment. Email us at info@locorollerderby.com and let us know you’re coming so we can make sure that we have skates in your size.

Q: What if I miss a practice?
A: That’s ok! There are no contractual agreements or attendance requirements for LOCO Roller Derby. We’d love to see you and derby-it-up with you, but if you can’t make it, it’s fine. We”ll just see you next time!
Q: Am I too old? Too big, too small, too young, too short, too tall?
A: No. If you’re female and aged 18 or over, you can come exercise with us on roller skates. All drills will be provided with modifications for beginners, intermediate skaters, and advanced skaters. You choose your own intensity level and your own skill level.
Q: Will I get hurt?
A. Just like any physical activity (running, cycling, skiing, swimming) there’s always a chance of an injury occurring, even though we skate with a modified low-contact rules set. We have a Health and Safety Committee with trained health professionals available for any injuries that might take place during a practice or scrimmage.
Q: What should I expect? What should I wear and bring?
A: Wear comfortable clothes for working out. Many of our experienced skaters have built a wardrobe around the sport, but first-timers often wear yoga pants and a tee-shirt. You might want to bring a change of clothes to go to the pub afterwards with the girls. Some first-timers show up with their idea of a roller girl costume, and while looking cute is great, tutus and eyeliner can get in the way of good balance and sweat. A LOCO practice is like an aerobics class, so that’s how you should dress.
An instructor is at every practice to help you learn the basics. You may participate in some group drills with the more advanced skaters. One you can safely skate, stop, and fall, you’re ready to start practicing more advanced movements.
Don’t forget a water bottle!
Q: Will we do anything besides skate and train like derby girls?
A: Yes! We are a community-minded organization involved in volunteering opportunities in our various towns and cities. We also love to spend time with each other off the track, so you can expect lots of after-practice pub nights, clinics, parties and outdoor skate meets. This is not only an exercise class, but can also be a great way to network, make new friends, and participate in charitable activities while you get in shape! We are about FUN, FITNESS and FRIENDSHIP!
You can also volunteer! Are you interested in becoming a board member? In leading practices? Can you help with promotions for LOCO Roller Derby? Do you know of any sponsors or companies that might help us procure training space, equipment, gear, or money for promotions? Can you sew and help make training equipment? Let us know and we’ll find jobs to suit you!
